Hazel Mallon and Karen Modrei

We are two Textile Artists drawn together by our mutual interest in body-machine dialogue and our effort is to investigate this relationship as well as to imagine possible future scenarios on how our existence within a reality that is increasingly shaped by technology could look like. We join disciplines of costume and fashion with architecture and craft, understanding the making/crafting as a complex process that connects performance, technology, sociology, politics, philosophy and arts.
The effort of our collective work is aiming at creating a dialogue that includes human, machine (tools) and material. We are trying to trigger mutual understanding, a respectful togetherness where questions about future development, care and responsibilities can be shared and discussed, including all involved parties.
We are using the format of performances in order to invite in- and outsiders to our table of discourse. In installations or performing pieces we are exploring these human-techno (techno-somatic) relations, and create space for acquaintances between the machine’s body, the human and the material. Technological efforts are made visible, elevated as works of art, as performance pieces, as intimate moments… propelled and initiated by human presence.
